Alex's E3 Predictions!

Hey there! I wrote up a list of predictions for E3, mostly Nintendo related. Since you probably found me through some dumb Nintendo GIF I animated, maybe it’ll be up your alley. Read after the break!

E3 is fast approaching, and you know what that means! A tiny amount of substance actually relevant to gamers like you and me, and a heck of a lot of BS that we don’t care about: pitches for new consoles and games sold by smarmy businessmen, the words “enhance,” “social,” and “experience,” and a whole mess of corporatespeak.

I’ll be upfront—every year I look forward to E3 less and less. When I was in college I actually signed up for a premium IGN account just so I could see streaming press conferences (something you can do ANYWHERE now), but this year? I just can’t bring myself to be that excited. Still, a tiny part of my brain has been mulling over how things are gonna go down this year, so I figured I’d share the things nagging my brain.

So here it is, here’s a few predictions I have for E3 2013! This is gonna be mostly Nintendo-centric.

Nintendo will bring out the big guns with software reveals.

I say this because this is an absolute necessity. The Wii U launch has been a complete disaster, and Nintendo is keenly aware of this fact. Now, Nintendo is doing fine, ultimately. Do you know how many fiscal years Nintendo has had a loss? One. Exactly one year. Nintendo has been turning a profit year after year for a long time, giving them a nice cushion of money. If the Wii U fails outright (becoming “a Dreamcast,” a phrasing that irks me to no end), Nintendo can afford to fail for at least another generation before coming legitimately worried.

Now. That said, no decent company is going to completely risk an entire generation, especially this early, to failure. I think Nintendo is savvy enough to know that what they need more than anything right now is to show that the Wii U is a machine built to play your favorite Nintendo franchise in sparkly, shiny HD. So I expect that there will be a few completely unannounced surprises this year, including…

The reveal of Zelda U

My guess is there will be a teaser trailer for a new Zelda game. It’ll happen during the Nintendo direct, because they’re not going to want to be quiet about it. Why?

For the last six or seven months, Nintendo has been hyping up its immediate releases for the Wii U, software like Game and Wario, Pikmin 3,The Wonderful 101, and New Super Luigi U. None of those games are system sellers. Sure, they’re things to make Nintendo fanboys like me happy. But Pikmin 3 is a niche game at best, something for Nintendo cultists, and The Wonderful 101 might only intrigue, well, Pikmin fans, and avid players of Platinum games.

But they don’t sell Wii Us. What does? An amazing looking, huge HD Zelda. It’s surely in development, and it probably has been since Skyward Sword was released. Now, it’s not gonna come out for a long time. Each Zelda is about five years apart from the last, so I would guess Zelda U isn’t coming out earlier than 2016. Maybe 2015, if they get their asses in gear. Either way there’s gonna be a couple E3s between now and when it’s released.

My point here is that the tease of a new Zelda would mean so much more to the gaming crowd than showing hours of gameplay of, say, Pikimin 3. Zelda U would make headlines! The Wonderful 101 will not. Listen to that crowd. That is the type of cheering you can’t buy. You don’t get that kind of reaction from corporate plants that are told to applaud everything. That is unabashed geekdom, the type of shivering excitement you get when you realize that blocky NES game you loved as a kid has turned into something exciting and beautiful. This is by far my favorite moment of any E3…ever. It might be one of my favorite moments in gaming history ever.

Heck, look back and search for initial reactions to the ONE piece of concept art they teased Skyward Sword with. They released it quietly at the end of a conference. One little image of Link and Fi. It caused a commotion because it was the promise of something big. Something new, something worth getting excited about and speculating over.

For this reason, I think Nintendo will have to show something from a new Zelda. And I think it’ll likely be a video, because this is the first time Zelda will be in HD, ever. There are a ton of gamers out there who don’t own a Wii U, and they might use the PS3 or Xbox as their primary console—but they’ll get a system for Zelda, because it’s the series they grew up with. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Nintendo, it’s that nostalgia sells better than crazy graphics or new ideas. Heck, it’s why they keep remaking the same Mario concepts over and over.

Mario U will be BIG

The first proper Mario title for the Wii U will be grand in scale. Bigger than Mario Galaxy and its sequel. The Galaxy games had the illusion of being much grander than they were in size. You float around in space, but they’re pretty linear, and relatively short unless you’re the type of person who goes after every star (ahem, ME).

Now, the next game might not be longer than the last generation’s Marios, but I have a feeling that they’re going to make the scope of it larger to go along with its shiny coat of HD paint. More exploration? Less linear progression? Who knows. I don’t think they’re going to reinvent the wheel here—heck, I REALLY HOPE they don’t, because Mario Galaxy 2 is probably my favorite game of all time.

Retro Studios will show the game it’s been working on, and it’ll be Star Fox

The last game Retro produced entirely on its own was Donkey Kong Country Returns in 2010. It’s high time we find out what they’ve been up to. It seems entirely logical to me that their next big game will be in the Star Fox series. Why? Well, Star Fox has been in the dumps lately. Do you know when the last new Star Fox release was? In 2006. Five years ago! And while Star Fox Command was relatively well received, it wasn’t a huge deal sales-wise. The Gamecube game before it, Star Fox: Assault, received mixed reviews, and failed to leave any impact either.

In short, Star Fox is due for a revival. So far, Retro has done an excellent job reviving two nearly-deceased franchises, Metroid and Donkey Kong Country. Their games in each series were very well reviewed and sold well, to boot. Retro would be the perfect studio to pump some new blood into the Star Fox franchise.

Now—that said, I think there’s also a fighting chance that Retro will go back to Metroid or instead jump onto the Wii U entry of Mario Kart. Metroid’s possible because that series is also in a slump, and they have experience working on it. Mario Kart is possible because Retro did some development for the 3DS game Mario Kart 7. They could likely get a new Mario Kart game out before the end of the year, which is exactly what Nintendo would want for holiday 2013 sales.

There will be a Metroid announcement

Metroid’s been on the back burner for a while. And unlike her big brother Link, Samus didn’t get much fanfare for her 25^th anniversary (likely because it was the same damn year). 2010’s Other M sold very poorly and pissed off a lot of people. They’re going to have to redeem the franchise. The thing is, I honestly can’t predict how they’re going to do it.

Part of me thinks it’s most likely that a 3DS game is in the works and will be announced (in some capacity) this E3. Mostly because the 3DS has been out a couple years now, a Metroid game could have been in the works for a while. And if they’re ever going to do a proper chronological sequel to 2003’s Metroid Fusion, I have a feeling it’ll be a 2D sidescroller… so the 3DS would be a proper fit. That said, they might want to announce a big new Metroid game for the Wii U, because, like Zelda, it’s the kind of game ex-Nintendo fanboys get giddy about.

Either way, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion this Metroid game will be developed internally, probably by the R&D1 dev team. At the very least, you can bet your ass they’re not letting Team Ninja near the thing.

Also, this makes me feel incredibly old: Super Metroid came out in 1994, while its sequel Metroid Fusion came out in 2003, a difference of nine years. It’s now been more time between then and now(TEN YEARS!) than the time between those two games. Freaky.

Kid Icarus is in hibernation

This one pains me, but I doubt very much we’ll hear from the Kid Icarus series for another decade or so. It makes me sad, because I would love them to do a beautiful Wii U sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising, one of my favorite games of 2012. We will get an Uprising themed level in Smash Bros, though, and maybe a new playable Kid Icarus character as well?

Smash Bros 3DS will be very different from Wii U, but they will interact with each other

I have a sneaking suspicion that the upcoming 3DS iteration of Smash Bros will not be identical in gameplay style to the Wii U version. Mostly because they’ll each have to justify their existence next to each other. Oddly enough it seems like out of the two of them, the 3DS is best suited for “classic” Smash Bros gameplay. You’ve got a nice simple controller with six buttons, a D-pad and a joystick.

With the Wii U, you’re gonna be using the (sigh) nunchuck/wiimote setup primarily, now that Gamecube controllers are out of the question. Yeah, there’s the Pro Controller dealie, but that’s a secondary controller, so I think they’re gonna shake up the controls to make the wiimote/nunchuck a little more accessible. On top of that, you’ve got to justify the use of the touch screen Game Pad. What the hell will that do? Probably some kind of “god mode,” a fifth player who alters the gameplay in ways that will be sure to amuse (read: annoy) the four people fighting. Or heck, maybe they’ll also allow five players now, but that seems weird to me.

While I’m at it, a few more Smash Bros predictions:

-A bigger adventure mode. It seems likely, given that each subsequent game builds on the adventure mode of the last.

-Ike, Meta Knight, Pokemon Trainer, Snake, Wolf, Lucario, and Lucas are out.Ike will be replaced with Chrom from FE: Awakening (or maybe Lucina?), the Pokemon Trainer will be replaced with either a new singular Pokemon or an expanded version of Charizard. Snake is out because that just seems like a one-time deal.

Lucario will obviously be replaced with the new powerful, mystical Pokemon with a movie about it, and all signs point to the new Mewthree/Newmew/Mewwhatever that was announced a few months back.

Lucas…augh. I really don’t want him gone. Heck, I’d rather have him replace Ness than have him go, because I use Lucas as my primary fighter. Maybe he won’t go, I dunno. After all, there’s no new Mother games coming out with a character to replace him with. But I kinda suspect there won’t be too many “clone” characters, so I have a feeling Lucas is gone.

Hm. Maybe they could replace him with Pokey Minch? Final Smash is the resurrection of Giygas? Rad.

-There won’t be too many crossover characters from other companies. No Mega Man, but Sonic will remain, especially since Sega’s all buddy-buddy with Nintendo at the moment. Since the new Smash is being developed partially by Namco, there will be at least one Namco character. It only makes sense that it’d be Pac-Man, probably with his own stage, which would be fucking awesome. In all likelihood they will add some Tekken character no one will care about…I hope they’ll at least choose that panda or kangaroo. They could add a Soul Calibur character, but I’m guessing they wouldn’t, since the bazongas on their female fighters would not fit the family friendly series.

3DS Kirby Annoucement

There have been Kirby games up the wazoo over the past few years, but I’m confident a new Kirby game will be announced for the 3DS soon, if not E3. There hasn’t been a Kirby game for the system yet, and they are relatively low-cost/quick development compared to the other Nintendo franchises. Besides, what the hell else is HAL Labs up to lately?

Monolith Soft’s new Game “X” will be shown and playable

Nintendo announced Monolith’s successor to Xenoblade Chronicles pretty quietly last year, showing just enough to whet the appetites of JRPG fans. Now whether it sold hugely or not, Xenoblade Chronicles had a huge commotion over it over the past year or so, with a rabid fanbase demanding (and getting!) its release in the US. Monolith is a relatively new acquisition of Nintendo’s, and I’m pretty confident they’re gonna take advantage of the company in the immediate future.

Yarn Yoshi will come out this year

I dunno if this was confirmed or not (all I see is speculation), but the Wii U “Yarn Yoshi” follow-up to Kirby’s Epic Yarn has got to come out this year. It’s a relatively small-budget platformer sure to please moms and dads when they’re thinking about holiday purchases.

Bayonetta 2 will get a big trailer but not be playable

Just a hunch. Given that Platinum is likely using most of its Wii U team resources to finish the already late Wonderful 101, I can’t imagine Bayonetta will be in any kind of playable form or come out this year.

There will be one more big “get” from a third party for Nintendo

This is likely wishful thinking, but I have to believe Nintendo has been aggressively going after an exclusive title from a third party over the past few months. Again, because they seriously need to. They’ve already got a three-game-deal with Sega for Sonic titles, which is big in terms of sales (yes, Sonic still sells well), but I think there will be something skewed towards an older crowd in the works.

There will be ONE oddball, out-there announcement

Again, partially wishful thinking, but it’s been a little while since Nintendo had a big, surprising reveal. The last one I can think of was the announcement of Kid Icarus: Uprising, a game which I had no freaking inkling would ever be developed. I suspect one resurrection announced at E3 or shortly thereafter.

Pokemon Snap 2? It’s the PERFECT time for that, on either the 3DS OR the Wii U. They’re both perfectly fit for real-time motion “camera” aiming.

Star Tropics 3? Ehh, probably not, despite the rumors that THIS might be Retro’s secret new title. It’d be pretty awesome, but Star Tropics never had the nostalgia factor that Kid Icarus had. That said, it’d be great! It would essentially be a new IP to many people, but tug on the heartstrings of a few very dedicated Nintendo nerds.

NON-NINTENDO BULLSHIT I DON’T CARE TOO MUCH ABOUT!

Microsoft will partially redeem itself, but not to the extent it needs

We all know Microsoft seriously fucked up its Xbox One reveal (HA! I just typed XBox with a capital “B” and Word autocorrected it for me. Fuck you, Microsoft, fuck your goddamn synergy). But could it get any worse than it is now?

Honestly, I don’t think so. The press conference was dismal enough, and they’ve spent the subsequent two weeks since dishing out additional shitty information about their console. They’ve pissed off a big portion of their consumer base and an even bigger portion of the gaming press.

Unless they reveal that the Xbox One has a mechanical hand that thwacks you in the genitals, I don’t think there’s gonna be any announcement worse than what they’ve already revealed.

So all they have to do now is show a lot of games. And that seems easy enough for them. Show the Microsoft exclusives, your Halo 5s, etc, and you’ll recoup some of your losses from two weeks ago. All of your losses? Fuck no, but at least you’ll appease the slightly-worried but still-loyal fanboys who are super excited for new multiplayer options in Halo.

With all that in mind, I do not see how the new Xbox will succeed in the way the 360 did. I simply don’t. I’ve got a friend who resells basically every game he purchases. It works for him! He ends up spending a lot less on gaming as a hobby, and I know in the end this helps him play more games than I do. Now, I like keeping my games if I love them, but he and a lot of people choose to resell their purchases. I cannot fathom how any of those people will choose to buy an Xbox One IF the PS4 is confirmed to NOT have the same DRM the Xbox does. And if people jump ship exclusively to the PS4, developers will as well.

And at that point, the differences between the Sony box and the Microsoft box will become a bit grander.

The new Half-Life game will be revealed

Okay, I’m cheating here. It won’t be revealed at E3. Valve is not showing anything there, and they have a history of basically staying out of the conference in any real capacity.

However: I do think that, within a few months, Valve is gonna casually go “hey, look. That E3 stuff was great. But how about you take a look at this?” And bam, out of nowhere, after years of speculation, there’s the followup to Half-Life 2.

Why? Well, even though Valve is primarily a PC developer, I do think there is some significance to this being a brand new generation of console hardware. Especially because Valve isn’t as hesitant to port to consoles anymore. There is a leap in graphical fidelity overall, and it seems timely for them to announce a followup to their Source engine with a brand spanking new Half-Life. Seriously, when they announce it, it’s gonna have no fanfare building up to it. An announcement will just appear.

The biggest reason is jesus Christ it’s been NINE YEARS since Half-Life 2 came out. I was a freshman in college. The Red Sox won the World Series, “Hey Ya!” was the number one song, and the biggest news story was that we saw Janet Jackson’s boob on live TV.

Time to wrap things up, how can each company win E3?

“Alex, you asshat! No one can win E3! It’s a show designed to get investors interested in backing gaming companies, not a time for the big three hardware developers to suck up to nerdy neckbeards like you.”

Oh…uh. Well yes, you’re right. No one “wins” E3, despite the way video game blogs tend to phrase it. But obviously some companies come out with a lot more momentum than others. So let’s say whoever comes out with the most momentum “won” E3. What would each company do to assure this?

MICROSOFT:

Apologize. Seriously, apologize, if not completely retract some of the things you promised two weeks ago. You’ve gone and pissed off people who had relatively few qualms with you beyond mild annoyance at how persistent you are about pushing your damn Kinect add-on. But what you said last week is an outright slap in the face to consumers and a handjob to publishers.

Seriously. Apologize. Justify the reasoning for your new practices. This is the BEST thing you can do if you’re seriously not going to change your mind about your DRM practices, always-on HAL 9000 and 24 hour check-in with Mommy Microsoft. You should be ashamed for these things, and if this is the reason you fail this generation of consoles, you deserve it.

SONY:

Easy! Literally have one less shitty aspect to your console than the Xbox One. I’d go as far as to say do not include the kind of DRM that the Xbox is having. Do this and you’ll kick their asses. Halo is not enough to keep Microsoft in the league of whatever it is you’re pulling out.

Also, don’t trump up the social aspect so much. No one is excited about your “share” feature and seriously, fuck you for the Facebook integration.

Oh, and don’t price your shit at 600 bucks. You do this, and you’ve screwed yourselves royally.

NINTENDO:

Ohh, I saved you for last for a reason. I love you. I want you to succeed. But you’re not succeeding. Here’s how you win E3 and stay relevant next to whoever wins out between Microsoft and Sony:

Bring out the games. Show them you’re a game machine. Where your two other competitors are marketing themselves as social media using, all-in-one devices that let you manage your TV and say hi to all your friends on Youtube, you have an opportunity to reassure consumers that you are a gaming company. You are THE gaming company, the people who made the console that all of us grew up with and remember fondly.

So bring out the games. Make them good, and have plenty of them. Hit us right in the nostalgia. Be a game machine amongst competitors that are fruitlessly trying to compete with home PCs.

THE FIRST BIG E3 IN YEARS, THE LAST BIG E3 EVER

Alright, time to wrap things up.

I’m engaging in some hyperbole here, but there’s a nugget of truth in what I say. I laughed when people alternated between saying “console gaming is dead!” and “PC gaming is dead!” But there is a truth halfway between these statements.

In all seriousness, this very well could be the last generation of gaming consoles as we know it. Both home computers and consoles are morphing into basically the same device. Cloud storage (and cloud computing!) are inevitably going to change both what computers are and how gaming is done.

I don’t think it’s going to be the “last big E3 ever,” but I do think it’ll be the last as we know it, the final big reveal of console hardware. Gaming is changing fast, and all three of these companies are going to have to adapt to survive.

Let the best one win.

Let me tell you a thing, about an amazing man named Patrick Stewart

I went to Comicpalooza this weekend and I was full of nervous energy as I was standing in line to ask Sir Patrick Stewart a question at his panel. I first had to thank him for a speech he had given at amnesty international about domestic violence towards women . I had only seen it a few months ago but I was still dealing with my own personal experience with a similar issue, and I didn’t know what to call it. After seeing Patrick talk so personally about it I finally was able to correctly call it abuse, in my case sexual abuse that was going to quickly turn into physical abuse as well. I didn’t feel guilty or disgusting anymore. I finally didn’t feel responsible for the abuse that was put upon me. I was finally able to start my healing process and to put that part of my life behind me.

After thanking him I asked him “Besides acting, what are you most proud of that you have done in you life (that you are willing to share with us)?”. Sir Patrick told us about how he couldn’t protect his mother from abuse in his household growing up and so in her name works with an organization called Refuge for safe houses for women and children to escape from abusive house holds. Sir Patrick Stewart learned only last year that his father had actually been suffering from PTSD after he returned from the military and was never properly treated. In his father’s name he works with an organization called Combat Stress to help those soldiers who are suffering from PTSD.

They were about to move onto the next question when Sir Patrick looked at me and asked me “My Dear, are you okay?” I said yes, and that I was finally able to move on from that part of my life. He then passionately said that it is never the woman’s fault in domestic violence, and how wrong to think that it ever is. That it is in the power of men to stop violence towards women. The moderator then asked “Do you want a hug?”

Sir Patrick didn’t even hesitate, he smiled, hopped off the stage and came over to embrace me in a hug. Which he held me there for a long while. He told me “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” I couldn’t stop thanking him. His embrace was so warm and genuine. It was two people, two strangers, supporting and giving love. And when we pulled away he looked strait in my eyes, like he was promising that. He told me to take care. And I will.

Sir Patrick Stewart is an absolute roll model for men. He is an amazing man and was so kind and full of heart. I want to let everyone know to please find help if you are in a violent or abusive house hold or relationship. There are organizations and people ready to help. I regularly have giant spiders fall around me in the shower because the only shower I have is in a basement. In a way it has gotten old, but I sometimes feel the spiders are coming to a peep show.
